Today, Scientist Rebellion was present at the Sustainability Summit hosted by Erasmus University Rotterdam and Hogeschool Rotterdam. The summit focused on the vital role universities should play in the transition towards a sustainable society.However, addressing the climate crisis requires more than just conversation. So it's up to us now, since politicians are mostly indecisive or making things worse. We are currently blocking the Rogier metro station in Brussels as part of the ongoing Stop Fossil Subsidies action. €400 billion in subsidies was given to the fossil industry in the EU last year, which is about €1000 per EU citizen.As scientists, we have rung the alarm bell about the climate crisis for decades. But the EU has not taken our warnings seriously- emissions continue to rise. The EU promises to keep global heating below 1.5°C, while allowing subsidization of fossil fuels and new exploration.“Any further delay in concerted action”, as the IPCC report notes, “will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all.”#stopfossilsubsidies

Today, together with Extinction Rebellion NL we blocked the VNO-NCW event "Market Access Day", aimed to promote unlimited economic growth without consideration of planetary boundaries. 🌏 VNO-NCW lobbies to maintain the 40 billion euros in subsidies that the Dutch government gives to the fossil fuel industry each year. VNO-NCW’s position is in stark contrast with climate science: rapid and profound greenhouse gas emission reduction is required in all sectors and domains of society to ensure a just and safe future for humanity on Earth. 🔥On a dead planet, everybody is out of business🔥VNO-NCW is an abbreviation for The Confederation of Netherlands Industry and Employers. The event was organised in association with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Commission.

This week’s devastating floods across central and eastern Europe have killed people & other life and destroyed many buildings. Last week saw flooding in Myanmar & Nigeria. Unfortunately, these catastrophic rainfall events are expected to occur more often due to climate change.https://lnkd.in/gEAerAgV “As long as the world burns oil, gas and coal, heavy rainfall and other weather extremes will intensify, making our planet a more dangerous and expensive place to live.” Dr Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at the Grantham Institute, quoted in the Guardian.https://lnkd.in/eyahfvMPThis is why Scientist Rebellion will keep taking to the streets with non-violent direct action. It is not too late for humanity to curb CO2 emissions. Less CO2 means less heating of our planet, and less risk of heavier rainfall and floods.

🇬🇧In sight and sound. Scientists are bringing climate science to the streets. On saturday we demonstrated in The Hague against the 40 billion euros per year the fossil fuel industry receives in subsidies in the Netherlands alone.The science is clear, it's time to act.🇳🇱Binnen zicht en gehoor. Wetenschappers brengen klimaatwetenschap naar de straten.Zaterdag gedemonstreerden we in Den Haag tegen de ±40 miljard euro per jaar die de fossiele industrie in Nederland aan subsidies ontvangt.De wetenschap is duidelijk, het is tijd voor actie!
